Berlin

Monday, May 30th, 2005

27′th-30′th May - Went to Berlin with Rob, Elmer, Bridget for the Bank Holiday weekend. Met Rob’s dad and Rob’s aunt when we arrived. Stayed at a nice hotel near the Tiergarten (a massive central park in Berlin) - the hotel room was enormous and had free internet facilities (which I used to email Robyn once or twice).

Really enjoyed seeing Eastern Berlin - one of the days Rob, Elmer, Bridget and I wandered around the central area which was in the East (including a Jewish area) - there are a large number of big abandoned buildings, and a lot in dis-repair. However, there appears to be a slow rejuvenation of the area with new shops being established (though often spoiled by the vast amounts of graffiti which was quite widespread in the Eastern part).

Also spent some time wandering around the brand new holocaust memorial - this consisted of large black blocks which appear level when looking from the street, but as you wander the path gets deeper - the blocks become taller - and suddenly you are lost and overwhelmed by such a large scale of the work (See BBC news articles: here, and here).

Star Wars

25′th May - Went to see Star Wars Episode 3 with Lyndon and Mim at a cinema at West India Quays (which was very enjoyable). Afterwards I spent a while going around taking photos on my phone of the buildings around Canary Wharf.

St Helen’s Romans Weekend Away

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

20′th-22′nd May. Went on another St Helen’s weekend away for the Roman’s RML groups. Ben Cooper took an excellent series of talks on the Sovereignty of God.

Weather was pretty decent (a few showers during the Saturday - but managed to get outside to play some mini golf with a few friends).

Turner Whistler Monet

Turner Whistler MonetWent to the Tate Britain on Sat 7th May to see the Turner Whister Monet exhibition. Most of the paintings on display compared their London works which was quite interesting. Particularly enjoyed Turner’s smog & light paintings (though I had seen many of them before) and Whistler’s
nocturnes
(such as this one).I ended up purchasing a canvas print of a Turner, Sun Setting over a Lake, which I might hang near one of my photos.
