The scenery was incredible - without a doubt the most beautiful thing I have seen anywhere in the world. The second day brought 150mm of rain which meant we were wading through metre deep water at points, but also got to see Fiordland at its finest! Water everywhere - waterfalls on every cliff face - proclaiming God’s glory. Highly recommend this to anyone.
I’ve just got hold of a cheap Canon inkjet printer + scanner, so figured would be cool to print a colour photo of some sort on the back. In the end I came up with the idea of printing a photo on one side, then printing my contact details on the other - meaning each card had a unique sky+cloud snapshot on the back. I’m pretty pleased with the overall effect.

The photo of the day link will also appear on this website in my Twitter feed (to the right hand side below the title, “Twitter Updates”) and can be viewed on Toastcrumbs in the Morocco photo set (which is obviously growing by the day).

Posting daily means I don’t have to worry about editing all the photos at once, gives me more time to think about which photos are worth uploading and I think is more interesting than just having a huge number to view all at once. I’d appreciate comments if you have any.

Technically, it started at Taylor’s Mistake (we’d had a picnic lunch and a swim - temperatures were topping 30 deg C). We headed over the hill to Lyttelton before heading around the big harbour towards Diamond Harbour. This was a lovely drive and we had a quick look at the wharf at Diamond Harbour which has been nicely done up. There was quite a bit of activity there and plenty of people were making the most of the day.

We then decided to head a bit further, so followed the road on towards Fort Levy. This was very interesting - the road headed inland and up the hills, taking us valleys filled with enormous red volcanic rocks.

Port Levy was quiet and fairly unpopulated - there was a very old small wooden church and a fairly old looking homestead. We were going to turn back about this point, but Lydia had noticed a sign to Little River, which is en-route to Akaroa, so we thought we’d head there and loop back to Christchurch.

This road turned out to be gravel and barely big enough for 1 car. It quickly became quite windy and rough which made progress slow. The road at some points had grass growing over it, and we passed over a creek at one point! However, it was quite scenic and took us through patches of native bush - we saw a number of yellowhammer birds. The road took us slowly up the port hills to a summit - Port Levy Saddle - covered with very old windswept totara trees (bent over a bit like at slope point). The views were magnificent and I wished I had my camera with me - not the first time that happened that afternoon.

From the saddle, the road took us winding down to Little River. We passed a couple of interesting looking cafes before heading back on the main road towards Christchurch. We saw the end/start of the rail trail route and saw Lake Forsyth - which is apparently a bird reserve (we spotted hundreds of black swans) - and Lake Ellesmere which looks more like a large estuary (I was surprised to see lakes in the Peninsula).

I’ve managed to plot a route on Google Maps. Really interesting afternoon trip and gave us a really good sense of the scale of the Port Hills/ Banks Peninsula. I’ll bring a camera next time.

Kawhe.com is the name for my new site, “New Zealand Cafe Review”.

The idea behind this is to identify the best cafes in New Zealand. At the moment we have reviewers in Christchurch and Auckland, but I’m hoping that as interest grows, so will the number of available reviewers.

This was a good exercise in Wordpress setups. The whole thing including finding a good theme and installing caching and star review module (to put pretty stars on the page) took four hours. In time, I may want to change the site to arrange reviews in a better structure, but for now tagging and categories will help me organise the reviews.

Reviews take into account the coffee (both espresso and flat whites), food and atmosphere.
